A Foggy Autumn Morning on the Lake

This was October 10, 2008. I woke up to a heavy fog that had settled over the lake, muting all sound and color. The air was completely still and damp.

An American flag hung motionless on its pole near the water, its colors standing out against the uniform gray of the mist. You could just make out some lights on the far shore, blurred by the thick air.

As the morning went on, the fog thinned just enough to reveal the autumn foliage lining the water. Patches of vibrant orange, yellow, and red emerged from the green, their shapes softened by the haze. The lake's surface was like glass, creating a perfect, muted reflection of the treeline.

It was a quiet, classic fall morning, the kind that feels slow and peaceful. A very different scene from what I'm used to back in the Bay Area.
