A Saturday Afternoon at the Swim Meet

A classic Bay Area summer Saturday in August, spent entirely at a swim meet. Much of the day is just waiting around. Before the events started, we set up camp on the grass with chairs and blankets.

Then it was time to get ready. Swim caps on, goggles adjusted. There's a whole staging process, with rows of kids sitting in folding chairs, organized by event and heat. They wait for their turn, a mix of nerves and excitement. You can see all the different team colors and caps lined up as they get closer to the pool.

The pool area itself was crowded with spectators under white tents, trying to find some shade from the bright sun. From our spot, we could see the officials and parents lining the deck, watching the swimmers take their marks. It's a long day of watching, cheering, and waiting for those few minutes of furious swimming in the bright blue water.
