San Francisco day, and the whole point was the Koret Children's Quarter in Golden Gate Park. The little car ride came first. The older one claimed a glittery teal Mustang and waved through most of her laps; her sister got a purple convertible and hung on to the wheel like the steering actually did something. A green jeep and a red fire engine kept circling past with other kids aboard.

Then the carousel, which has been there since 1912 and carries 62 animals — not just horses but zebras, a cheetah, a panda, and a bald eagle, which is what the big one picked. Rides are two dollars for adults, a dollar for kids six to twelve, and under five ride free with a paid adult, so the small one rode on Mom's ticket and mostly hid behind the brass pole between giggling fits.

The eagle, for the record, is clutching a fish in its talons.
