October Saturday at Clancy's Pumpkin Patch

Drove into the city for an October Saturday at Clancy's, the pumpkin patch on Sloat right next to the zoo, at the corner where Sloat meets Skyline. Their sign claims the first pumpkin patch in San Francisco, going back to 1979, and on a warm Saturday it looked like most of the city had turned up — rows and rows of pumpkins, wheelbarrows everywhere, hay bales, the whole thing.

The kid could not be pulled away from the photo cutout board: a black cat sitting on pumpkins, face-hole just at toddler height. Went back to it again and again, hands hooked over the edge. At one point we got everyone lined up in it — scarecrow, farmer with the baby poking out the top, cat.

Then the actual pumpkin selection, which the kid handled by commandeering a wheelbarrow nearly as tall as the handles allowed. We came home with a white one, small enough to ride in the wheelbarrow next to nothing else. The Michigan jersey got some sun on the hay bales while the baby napped through half of it.
