Work Dinner at Finca Morneta in Mallorca

In Mallorca this week with my work friends, and today ran long in the best way. The morning went to the water out at Formentor — clear enough to see the bottom a good way out, pale green shading to deep blue toward the headlands. We stayed near the beach most of the afternoon, pines between us and the bay, a sailboat anchored out past the point.

Evening was the company dinner at Finca Morneta, a hilltop estate that dates to the 13th century — stone halls, arched doorways, an old oil mill and cellar somewhere below, and century-old olive trees in the gardens. Everyone wore name tags, which was helpful, since I know plenty of these people only as usernames. My wife and I had a glass of wine on the terrace while the sky did its thing over the valley.

Cooks had vegetables hanging on hooks over an open fire pit near the dining tent — peppers, fennel, corn, a whole pineapple. The main building was lit up purple by the time we walked out, candles along the pool.
