Ballgame and Fireworks at Comerica Park

Tigers and Yankees at Comerica Park, and we got to our seats while the grounds crew was still working the infield and players jogged through warmups in the outfield. The board had Knotts starting for Detroit against Hernandez, and the little scoreboard out in left read 74 degrees just before seven when things got going.

The park sits right against downtown Detroit — office towers and a church steeple over the left field wall, the big Pepsi globe on its sign past the foul pole. You can watch the game and the city at the same time, which I hadn't expected from a ballpark.

The game itself ran from evening into night, the stands filling in as it went, most of the crowd apparently there for the same reason we were: fireworks after the last out. They launched them from the outfield grass, straight up between the light towers, smoke drifting over the skyline while the Pepsi Porch sign glowed off to the right. Whatever was burning on the field out there was still smoldering when we filed out.
