Fourth of July in Truckee, and the day started at Gateway Station 92, where the fire district had the pancake breakfast banner strung from a ladder truck extended over Donner Pass Road. The line for pancakes wrapped along the front of the station, past a flag hung two stories tall between the bay doors, and the row of beach chairs on the curb was already three deep by the time we got there.

We found a spot on the pavement near Meadow Way and settled in with everyone else — hats with tinsel stars, kids on coolers, an older couple next to us in matching flag shirts. From there you could see clear down the road toward the mountains, still holding a few streaks of snow.

The parade came through slow: a Town of Truckee police pickup with the bed full of kids and a bulldog, all of them waving, then the Tahoe Truckee Civil Air Patrol cadets marching with the colors right past the station. Cyclists kept threading down the empty lane between entries. Hot enough that people started drifting back toward the shade before the tail end came by.
