A Cold Bright December Day in Cambridge

Cambridge in December, and the plan was just the river. We crossed onto a bridge over the Cam near Jesus Green and stopped there a while — gulls packed thick on the water by the near bank, narrowboats moored in a line along the far side, cyclists and walkers strung out along the path below us.

From there we followed the water down through the parkland behind the colleges, the open lawns and big bare trees running right to the bank. The punts were still going, which surprised me for December — poles up, passengers bundled, a couple of them working past the white cottages across the river. Farther along, college buildings showed through the trees on the far bank, and the sky was already closing down by the time we got there.

The walk ended on Thompsons Lane, colored bulbs strung under the eaves of La Mimosa on the corner, the pavement still wet from earlier.
