Christmas at home in Truckee this year, and it started with Santa on the couch. Full suit, gloves, the works, wedged in between the girls, who kept their pajamas on for the whole visit — one in a red beanie, the other in a Def Leppard shirt over plaid flannel bottoms. He posed again by the tree in the front room before heading out.

The decorated cookies made it onto the plaid Christmas plate: two gingerbread men with candy eyes, a green tree, a couple of snowflakes buried in frosting and sprinkles. The card game came out around the coffee table, grandparents on the couch, everyone reaching across the glass to trade cards.

Presents went slowly. The cat parked itself in a lap and got its paws into the wrapping paper on one of them, so that gift took a while. Records in one box, and an enormous brown stuffed bear that came out of packaging nearly as big as the kid opening it.
