Stage and Water in San Marcos

A group of children and adults in costumes stand on a brightly lit stage with a red backdrop.

Down to San Marcos for the play first — Alice in Wonderland, a full stage of kids under red light. The Queen of Hearts stalked the front in a crown and striped tights with a flamingo for a croquet mallet, and two little ones stood off to the side sewn into playing-card costumes, hearts and spades from neck to knee. A White Rabbit, a Mad Hatter, the whole deck.

Then the water half of the day. We got a boat from the marina at the Lakehouse Resort and took it out, the girls claiming the bow before we'd cleared the dock. Life jackets cinched, bare feet on the deck, hair going sideways in the wind. He ran the tiller most of the way with the little outboard idling behind him, which left me free to do nothing in particular.

By the time we turned back the girls had migrated to the cockpit and gotten into a bag of cheese puffs, one of them chewing straight at me with orange fingers. The bag did not make it back to shore with anything in it.
