A Few Days Looking Up in Late May

Spent a few days near the end of May just walking around downtown. The weather was mostly overcast, which really changed the feel of the architecture. I started near a modern fountain with these large, cylindrical towers and brick walls, the water looking pale under the cloudy sky.

The skyscrapers were the main event. Lots of glass reflecting the grey clouds, making the whole area feel muted and immense. Some buildings were sheer, reflective surfaces, while others were a stark grid of windows. You could see entire buildings mirrored in the sides of others. Elevated, covered walkways curved between the structures, connecting everything in a self-contained loop.

It wasn't all just glass and steel, though. Tucked between the newer towers were older buildings with more intricate details. I found myself looking for those moments — a narrow gap between two dark towers revealing a white spire, or the close-up texture of brickwork and stone against a patch of blue sky that was starting to break through the clouds.

By the last day, the sun was out. It completely changed the light. Looking up through a metal framework, one of the tall towers was framed against a bright blue sky. It was a good, quiet stretch of days just observing the shapes of the city.
