A Few Days of San Diego Coast

Expansive view of a coastal wetland with water channels, the ocean, residential hills, and a cloudy blue sky.

Traded Truckee for San Diego and a few days of sun and coast in mid-April. First morning was a lagoon trail north of the city — chaparral scrub on the bluff, the wetland channels spread flat below with the ocean at the far edge — and then down onto the beach itself, sandpipers working the wet sand between waves.

Encinitas after that: the meditation gardens on the cliff, where the cactus beds sit right at the edge with the surf breaking below, and koi ponds farther in under enormous philodendron leaves. People have been tossing coins into the shallow one; there's a whole pile of them in the middle with the fish circling around it. Stayed on the sand that evening long enough to watch the last orange band sit on the horizon while the cliff went black.

Last stop before heading out was downtown, East Village, to walk around Petco Park — home of the Padres since 2004, with the 1909 Western Metal Supply Co. building worked into left field. Palm trees growing right up against all that white steel.
