Tram Ride Above Olympic Valley Snow

·Placer County, California·#winter#tahoe#skiing#snow#landscape-photography
Snow-covered mountains with numerous pine trees under a blue sky, with skiers on sun-dappled slopes and a rainbow lens flare.

Second day of the new year, up in Placer County snow. We rode the tram out of Olympic Valley and the floor of the canyon dropped away fast — the whole bowl below was cut up with tracks already, skiers threading between the trees, wind pulling snow off the ridgelines in long streamers. A few clouds were sitting in the valleys but the sky over the peaks was mostly open.

From the top the view runs all the way out to Lake Tahoe, a strip of dark blue past the nearer ridges, with more white mountains stacked behind it on the far shore. Hard to take in how much country there is up here — the county alone covers something like fifteen hundred square miles, and from that deck it looks like most of it.

Another tram car crossed below us on the way down, small against the whole face. Snow was still blowing sideways off the summit when we left.
