Football Saturday at Michigan Stadium

Football Saturday in Ann Arbor, and the whole day ran on it. The morning was tailgating in the lot — an RV, a grill, everybody in maize and blue down to the baby, who slept through most of it in a little sunflower-print outfit and got passed around anyway. Somebody had a whole Michigan-themed shirt on, stadiums and Go Blue all over it, which felt about right for the crowd.

Then into the Big House itself. The place opened in 1927 and now holds 107,601 — the largest stadium in the country — and it looks it from down low. The new press box complex looms over the far side now, four levels, 186 feet of it. The stands were nearly solid maize by kickoff, the band came out, and our whole section was up waving gold towels under the Michigan Stadium sign.

The baby stayed back at the tailgate for the game, which was probably the right call for everyone's ears. The team ran out through the tunnel and the noise did the rest.
