A Hazy Start to the New Year
First walk of the new year, and the haze never let go of it. Down along the channel a sailboat came through under sail with two people aboard, a powerboat cutting past the other way, and the far shore — sand, houses, a line of palms — stayed a gray cutout the whole time. Gulls strung out along the jetty rocks like they were waiting for something too.
We hung around long enough for the sun to drop, which by then was just a pale disc working down through the cloud bank behind the palm trunks. Two days into 2009 and it already feels like the marine layer plans to stay.
Ended up inside at the aquarium tanks afterward, which was the warmest part of the day. Orange anthias everywhere, a blue damselfish with a yellow belly, and one seahorse standing on the sand with its tail curled under it, not going anywhere at all.
