Over in Lafayette for the late December holiday season, two days out from Christmas. The dog got stuffed into a Santa dress with a red tulle skirt and a bow at the neck, and mostly tolerated it — sat still for the hugs, kept looking off toward the door. Presents were already piled under the big tree on a gold cloth, candy-cane stripes and Santa-print paper, nobody allowed to touch them yet.

Later there was a smaller white tree with butterfly ornaments and a Santa hat making the rounds between the girls. By evening everyone had migrated in front of the lit tree for pictures, which held together for about two rounds before it turned into tongues out and stretched faces. The dog had been freed from the costume by then.
