A Late June Wedding on Lake Michigan

A wedding in Port Sheldon Township, at a big gray lodge set up on the dunes over Lake Michigan. From the beach side the building sits alone above the grass, nothing else around it but sand and a few trees.

There was time to wander before the ceremony — a sand trail cut through the dune grass toward the water, and down at the channel boats were running out to the big lake past the pier.

The arch stood at the rail facing the water, draped in white with roses and baby's breath and long trailing greens. The sun went down directly behind it, straight out over the lake with nothing between here and the horizon. The color hung on for a long time after — the whole sky went pink and orange over the dunes while everyone was still out there.

Hard to argue with getting married with that behind you.
