A Family Wedding on the Beach
A family wedding on Lake Michigan today, ceremony right on the sand. The girls were flower girls — matching white dresses and little crowns of greenery and baby's breath, which stayed on their heads for a surprisingly long time given the wind coming off the water.
Between the pictures and the ceremony the kids got loose in the dune grass behind the beach, the girls and the ring bearer in his little tan suit, all of them charging up and down the sand paths while the adults stood around in dress clothes pretending not to sweat.
The arch was wood, draped in white, with a big spray of roses and dahlias and ivy at one corner. The ceremony ran late enough that the sun was going down over the lake behind it as things wrapped up. One of the flower crowns ended up in somebody's purse. The other is unaccounted for.
