Long Hot Summer Day in San Francisco

The swim meet took us down to 101 Linda Street in the Mission District. Mission Community Pool is San Francisco’s only outdoor city-operated public pool, built back in 1916, and the concrete deck was already jammed with pop-up tents and folding chairs by the time we claimed a patch of grass.

We wore matching neon SSC shirts for the occasion. The downtime between heats stretched out, turning the trip into a long, hot summer day at the pool. She passed the wait on a beach towel, blocking the glare with a plastic My Little Pony.

When they called the next age group, the kids lined up behind the yellow starting blocks under the diving boards. The starter gave the signal, the row of swimmers dove in, and we stood by the chainlink fence tracking a yellow SSC cap down the lane.
