Swim meet day in Pleasant Hill, and a hot one. The short drive over didn't take long but the standing around in full sun made up for it. The pool deck was packed the whole time — kids queued up behind the yellow starting blocks, coaches in neon shirts crouching down to point the smallest swimmers at the right lane, parents pressed against the orange fencing trying to spot their heat.

Las Trampas had their blue canopies up near the starting end and everyone without a tent of their own kept drifting toward the shade. One little swimmer in a navy and yellow suit stood on her block forever, tugging at her cap while an official leaned in to talk her through it. The water looked better than anything else on the deck.
