Mid-April Hike in the East Bay Hills
Took the dog up into the open space this morning while the grass is still green — another few weeks and these hills go brown for the year. The mustard is at its peak right now, whole slopes of it in yellow bands, thicker than I remember seeing it out here before.
We followed the dirt track up along the ridge under the oaks. From the top you could see clear back over Walnut Creek to the hills on the far side of the valley. A couple of other hikers were coming up the trail below us, but otherwise we had the ridge to ourselves.
The dog held up fine on the climb, tongue out the whole way, and insisted on stopping in the same patch of shade on the way down. The trail was already dusty in spots, so the rain is done, probably.
