A Sunny Weekend Spent at the Local Zoo
The first weekend of April was bright and clear, so we decided to spend a day outdoors at the zoo. It felt like the right kind of thing to do on a sunny Saturday.
It was crowded, but quiet in some of the corners. I caught a glimpse of a monkey hiding up in the branches, almost completely camouflaged by the leaves and the dappled sunlight. It took a moment to even spot it.
Further in, the flamingos were impossible to miss. A whole flock of them stood in their enclosure by the pond, incredibly pink against the trees and water. They mostly stood still, all facing more or less the same direction. We also passed the zebra enclosure, where one was standing alone on a rocky outcrop, just behind the wires.
The giraffes were in a large, dusty pen under a perfectly blue sky. One was stretching its neck up to a feeder, while another one looked straight down at us from over the fence. There's something about how they move that's so deliberate and strange.
