A Mid-July Week on Coronado
Partway through our mid-July week on Coronado now. The mornings start grey with the marine layer, and it doesn't seem to bother anyone — the beach fills up regardless, umbrellas the whole length of it toward Point Loma.
Walked over to the Hotel del Coronado while the sky was still overcast. There's a big rainbow banner wrapped around the turret under the American flag, which I hadn't expected on a building that old, and it works.
The bay side is where I keep ending up in the evenings. From the Ferry Landing you get the whole downtown skyline across the water, sailboats out in numbers before dinner. Tonight a couple of tugboats brought an enormous grey Navy vessel past the pier right at dusk, long and flat and slow, and half the pier stopped to watch it go by. Stayed on the sand after dark and caught fireworks going off somewhere across the bay, small green bursts over the lights.
