A Morning of Rehearsal and Play at Preschool

A line of children stands on a low stage in a large hall with a piano, drums, and an organ.

May 11, 2011. A pretty standard day at the co-op preschool. The kids started out in the main hall, which looks like it's part of a church. They were lining up on the steps of the stage, maybe rehearsing for a song or a little show. We managed to get them all to sit still on one of the pews for a group photo, which is always a minor miracle.

After their time on the big stage, it was back to the familiar chaos of the classroom. The space was full of different stations and activities, and everyone scattered to their preferred corner. It's always interesting to see what they gravitate towards.

A few of the girls immediately set up an indoor picnic on a red and white checkered blanket, complete with baskets and stuffed animal guests. Elsewhere, some of the boys were busy with wooden blocks on the playmat, while others were sorting through felt pizza and plastic fruit at a small table. Just a busy, typical morning of play. Capturing these moments feels like documenting a very specific, fleeting chapter.
