Mother's Day Brunch on the Patio
Mother's Day started with a gift from school: a black-and-white photo of our daughter holding a framed sign that says "I love you Mom! Mother's Day 2018," grinning like she's posing for a mugshot. That one's going on the wall.
Then brunch at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort on Grand Pacific Drive, out on the patio. The buffet ran long in every direction — eggs benedict, an omelet station, bacon, seafood, charcuterie bites, and bottomless mimosas, which I took them up on. The girls skipped most of that and went straight for sushi rolls, shrimp, and a plate of desserts each: chocolate shells, red velvet cupcakes, candied bacon. I went back for the cheesecake bars — one pistachio, one blueberry with edible glitter on top, which felt right for the occasion.
There was a yellow tulip in a vase on the table and a view of the hills behind the railing. Nobody rushed. On the way out we stopped in the lobby for a picture together and one of them gave me bunny ears, which is about the level of reverence I can expect around here.
