A Neighborhood Halloween, 2011
The evening started with the usual pre-Halloween chaos. Kids wrangling their costumes—a vampire rubbing his eyes, a small parrot, a bee. That familiar buzz of anticipation before we finally opened the door and headed out into the neighborhood.
The sun had just set, leaving that deep blue twilight sky. As soon as we were outside, they were off, running down stone paths and sidewalks from one house to the next. That first burst of freedom and sugar-fueled excitement.
We joined other families making the rounds. The kids would cluster on front porches, waiting with their buckets out. Some houses went all out with lights and decorations. It was a blur of costumes and motion in the dark. At one point, we took a short break on a curb, just a quick pause before rejoining the flow.
The best parts were the houses lined with glowing jack-o'-lanterns. We'd walk up these illuminated paths, our whole group just silhouettes against the warm light of an open doorway. The pumpkins lighting the way, the sound of kids laughing, the simple tradition of it all. It was a good night.
