New Year's Day Cookie Party for the Newborn

We rang in 2007 with a cookie party in honor of the newborn, who slept through most of it in the car seat, red snowflake hat pulled down over both ears, pacifier abandoned somewhere near an elbow.

The decorating got competitive fast. Somebody built a full snowman out of frosting, standing up off the cookie, with what looked like olives for buttons. Somebody else made a green-lipped face with a mouthful of white chocolate teeth that no one wanted to be the first to eat. There was also one that just said "I heart" something in red icing, which felt like the honest entry. We lined them all up on napkins on the counter for judging before anyone was allowed to bite in, and then everybody posed holding their own like it was an award.

The guest of honor woke up eventually and got changed into the yellow Michigan onesie for the occasion, sat in the bouncy seat looking either unimpressed or half asleep, hard to say which. No cookie for the baby this year. Maybe next New Year's.
