A Pink Tutu for a San Francisco Afternoon
Took the pink tutu down to San Francisco for the afternoon — leotard, tulle skirt with silk flowers at the waistband, and the headband with the big pink pouf, the whole ballerina outfit out well ahead of Halloween. The trick-or-treat bag came along too, orange felt with a wand poking out the top, and at some point a lollipop went into it and then straight back out.
She sat down flat on the brick pavement to work on the lollipop while grown-ups in dress shoes stepped around her, and she stayed put until she was ready. Later somebody's fall display — hay bales and two stuffed scarecrows — and she stood between them, sticky-chinned, holding the red lollipop upright like a second wand. Couldn't tell if she thought the scarecrows were company or furniture.
Her mom carried her the last stretch along the sidewalk, past the parked cars, both of them cracking up about something.
