A Quiet Birthday Celebration at Home in Truckee

An October evening in Truckee for a birthday at home. We all gathered where we always do: in the kitchen. The warm light on the wood cabinets, drinks and snacks on the counter — it felt like any other family get-together, which is exactly what it was.

The gift-giving started with a big, bright bag full of colorful tissue paper. A classic birthday staple. She posed for a few photos, humoring me as I documented the moment.

Then came a smaller, more intriguing pink box. As she started to open it, the rest of us watched from around the island. Her grandmother stood in the background, just observing with a quiet smile.

She lifted the lid, and her face broke into a genuine smile. It’s these small, uneventful moments that I find myself photographing the most. Nothing grand, just a quiet celebration in the heart of the house, marking another year.
