An Early October Weekend at a Lakeside House

We spent a couple of days away from home in early October. We arrived on a Friday to clear skies and incredibly bright sun. The house was right on the water, a red building with a deck looking out through a lawn dotted with huge, mature trees.

The most striking thing about the place was the scale of those trees. I found myself constantly just looking up into the canopy. Against the bright, partly cloudy sky, the branches formed these complex, dark silhouettes. You could really see their structure.

Walking around the property felt like being in a small, private forest. In the afternoon, the sun angled through the leaves, creating long shafts of light that moved across the ground. It was quiet and a good place to just watch the light change for a couple of days.
