A Seventeenth Birthday Celebration at Home in Truckee
It was a Monday in mid-October, just a regular evening at home in Truckee that happened to be a birthday. We crowded in for a few selfies to mark the occasion. The kids were just being themselves—one snacking on a slice of watermelon, another striking a pose.
Then came the main event. We gathered around the wooden dining table as the candles were lit. The cake was simple, covered in white frosting and sprinkles, with two green candles shaped into a '17'. The light from the flames flickered across everyone's faces.
She sat there smiling, the glow from the candles catching her eyes. You can see the reflection of the evening light in the window behind her, the trees just outside. A moment later, she leaned in, took a deep breath, and blew the candles out as her younger brother watched on, still chewing on his snack. Just a simple, quiet celebration to mark another year.
