Seventeenth Birthday at Home in Truckee
Her seventeenth birthday, and we kept it at home in Truckee. Everyone crowded in for the usual round of selfies before dinner, the littlest one working through a wedge of watermelon the whole time and eventually just chewing on the rind like a harmonica.
The cake was funfetti with white frosting, set out on the glass stand on the floral runner, with a 1 and a 7 candle stuck in the top. She sat at the round table in her big green hoodie and blew them both out while the littlest one watched from the next chair, still holding the rind.
Seventeen. She smiled for the candles and looked half embarrassed by the attention, which is about right for seventeen. Cake got cut right after.
