Spring Break Road Trip to Paradise Nevada

Spring break started at school, of all places. The second grade put on "The Cheese Stands Alone," and our mouse — felt ears, painted-on nose and whiskers — kept the whole costume on well after the curtain, all the way through the library. Then into the car, the two of them sharing a pillow in the back seat, one reading, one half asleep, until we made Paradise.

The hotel here has a row of gold fish sculptures spitting arcs of water into a long pool, and the kids parked themselves on the ledge in swimsuits before we had properly unpacked. Down the Strip, the Bellagio has been running its fountain show since the resort opened in 1998 — more than a thousand fountains dancing to music and lights on an 8.5-acre man-made lake, the whole place themed after a town on Lake Como. A lot of water for the middle of the desert.

Lunch was a surf-shack sort of restaurant, coloring pages spread across the table, and the little one leaned over and kissed dad on the cheek before the food ever showed up.
