Summer Birthday with Swimming and Pizza

Swim meet in the morning, birthday party in the afternoon — a full day. The meet ran long the way they do, heats going off one after another under the tents, and there was breaststroke to swim before anyone could think about pizza. Between events the girls posed with the stuffed polar bear by the clubhouse door, one of them holding its jaw open over her head.

Then everybody peeled off to Skipolini's for the birthday. Eight girls around a long table on the patio, two big pizzas, pink lemonade all around. Gifts after — polka-dot bags, a Beanie Boo penguin, and a homemade card that wished a happy birthday to kittens and puppies too, more or less. The girls read the cards out loud to each other, heads together over each one.
