Summer Swim Trip to Scottsdale
Summer swim trip to Scottsdale for the girls' meet. Before we ever got to the pool there was a backyard full of SSC caps and wet swimsuits, and somebody's idea of a human pyramid — six or seven of them stacked on the grass, one climbing up the back to stand on top with her arms out. The pyramid collapsed and reassembled more times than I counted.
Then the meet itself, at the aquatic center on Thompson Peak Parkway — thirteen lanes, which is more pool than the girls are used to. Event numbers inked on hands so nobody missed a heat. One of them stood there with her tie-dye goggles already fogged before she even got in the water, hugging herself in the sun.
By the last events one kid was up on Dad's shoulders in pink jelly sandals, done swimming for the day, while the scoreboard behind them was still running heats.
