Birthday party at the pool in Walnut Creek, luau theme all the way through — ten girls in raffia grass skirts and plastic leis over their swimsuits, two of them clutching whole pineapples like trophies. The birthday girl wore a purple flower crown over her mermaid suit and did not take it off.

Getting all ten to stand still on the deck for a group picture took a while; getting them to hula took no time at all. They lined up along the lane markers and swayed and shrieked, skirts rustling, bare feet on the hot concrete.

The cake was two tiers of teal frosting with orange and yellow icing flowers, set on a pink board fringed with brown paper cut to look like more grass skirt. She leaned in close to watch the first slice come out, and had a finger in the flowers before it hit the plate.
