Kevin's Wedding on an Ojai Hillside

Kevin got married today, on a hillside above the Ojai valley with the orchards laid out below and mountains hazy behind everything. Full sun, no shade at the ceremony site — someone had put out a basket of paper parasols by the lawn, and most of the guests took one while they waited.

We walked out along a dirt path through the scrub to get there, groomsmen in navy, Kevin standing apart in light blue. The chuppah had a white drape across the top that the wind kept lifting and rearranging all through the photos afterward. Nobody fixed it. The bride's hair is pink right now and it worked with the flowers, which were mostly orange dahlias.

The girls wore matching pink dresses with flower crowns and took the flower-girl job seriously right up until they didn't. Before we left the house the baby sat on a lap on the porch bench, pacifier in, unbothered by all of it.
