Christmas in Truckee with Family and Fresh Snow
Christmas in Truckee this year, everybody plus the dog. First order of business, before heading up, was the family picture on the hillside — the kids in matching poppy dresses, the dog stuffed into a red striped sweater. In the version where the grownups all managed to smile at the same time, the older kid had a tongue out. That's the one to keep.
Cookie duty in the kitchen after that: dough rolled flat on the granite, flour everywhere, a tray of red and green cutters, gingerbread men pressed out one at a time along the edge.
Then the snow, which was fresh and deep on the trees. From the top of the runs the whole of Lake Tahoe sat below the chairlift, flat blue all the way across to the far mountains, skiers strung out down the slope. Not a bad way to spend the 24th.
