A Tale of Two Holiday Parades: Disneyland and San Francisco
Looking back at these photos from one holiday season, I'm struck by the two completely different parade experiences we had. The first was at Disneyland, a classic Christmas production on a clear, sunny day. Everything was meticulously designed, from the enormous flocked tree on Main Street to the character floats. There was Mickey in a top hat, Goofy on a gingerbread house, and a whole procession of snowmen waving to the crowd.
The second experience was the Chinese New Year parade in the city, and it had a totally different energy. This was at night, and the streets were packed with people. Instead of a polished production, it felt more like a vibrant, chaotic community event. The air was filled with excitement from the crowd and the performers.
The centerpiece, of course, was the massive, illuminated dragon that snaked its way through the dense city streets. Seeing it glowing against the dark buildings, surrounded by the constant flash of cameras from the crowd, was unforgettable. It was a raw, energetic celebration, a world away from the sunny spectacle of the daytime parade.
