Halloween stretched into a whole week this year, ending in Día de los Muertos. The girls settled on their costumes early — one a cracked porcelain doll, hairline fractures drawn across her forehead, white lace dress, and roller skates, which made trick-or-treating an open question. The other went full sugar skull: white face, spiderweb on the forehead, paper flowers and a little bone pinned into a black veil, over a green embroidered Mexican dress with a pink tulle skirt.

The school did its costume parade on the blacktop — a Snow White, a Warriors cheerleader, a mermaid in sequins — and the teachers came as a bunch of grapes, a pineapple, and a strawberry, construction-paper stems taped to headbands.

The pumpkin got carved into a bat and set out on the porch among the purple lights. Halloween night ended at a party in Walnut Creek, the sugar skull passed from lap to lap, everyone in something — a witch hat, a black-and-silver vest, a baby wearing butterfly wings who did not look convinced.
