A Winter Weekend Wandering Through Cambridge

Spent a weekend in Cambridge in mid-December of 2021. The weather was exactly what you'd expect: overcast and grey, which made the old stone of the colleges look even more imposing. One of the first sights was the view of the chapel behind its severe black spiked fence, standing against a flat white sky.

The city center was busy, even for a cold weekend. People were milling around the market square near a large stone church, its tower a constant landmark as I walked around. The light was muted, and the whole city felt steeped in its long history.

Stepping inside some of the buildings was a welcome escape from the chill. The interiors were a complete contrast to the understated exteriors. I spent a good amount of time just looking up at the incredibly ornate, gilded domes. The sheer amount of detail and craftsmanship in the ceilings was stunning, with light catching the gold from high windows and skylights.

Wandering through the college grounds, past historic gates and into quiet courtyards, felt like stepping into another world. There were a few other people around, some pulling suitcases, others just walking through. The mix of grand stone and detailed brickwork was everywhere, a constant reminder of the city's academic roots.
