Afternoon and Sunset on the Goleta Coast

An outdoor resort pool with striped umbrellas, many palm trees, lush red flowers, and a distant beach.

Down out of the snow and onto the Santa Barbara coast for a day in Goleta. The afternoon went slowly around the hotel grounds — red-and-white striped umbrellas rimming the pool, bougainvillea everywhere, and between the palm trunks a clear line down to the water. By evening the same umbrellas were all folded and cinched shut behind the fence.

Then down to Goleta Beach County Park for the last of the day. The park sits on a half-mile sandbar topped with Mexican fan palms, wedged between UCSB and the airport, and the county pier runs 1,450 feet straight out from it, looking over the open Pacific on one side and Goleta Bay on the other. The dog worked the sand while the sun dropped behind the pier, tongue out, tracking every gull.

A few people stayed out on the pier past sundown. From the beach they were just marks against the railing.
