An August Campout in the Marin Headlands
Getting an overnight spot in the Marin Headlands means booking ahead, since the Golden Gate National Recreation Area only maintains four campgrounds north of the bridge. We hauled the canvas tent out for an August campout in a grassy field. By mid-afternoon, the tent was staked and our folding chairs were set, joining a loose perimeter of cars and campers parked along the tree line.
Once the sun dropped, we laid a striped blanket on the grass. Two other sites across the field already had fires going near their dome tents. We shifted to our own metal fire ring later in the night. Flashlights caught the smoke while the group held roasting sticks over the logs, the iron grill grate flipped back out of the way.
