First Day of Kindergarten in San Francisco

Kindergarten starts today. The outfit had clearly been settled well in advance: rainbow-striped dress, gray cardigan with rhinestones on one shoulder, teal feather headband, pink socks, purple sequined shoes.

Before we left the house the two girls ended up squeezed into the same chair, cheek to cheek, one laughing so hard her head tipped back while the other kept watch on something across the room. Getting anyone out the door after that took a while.

Out front we set the chair on the walk with the chalkboard sign propped beside it — First day of school, 2012, Kinder-garten, the word broken across two lines to fit the frame. The backpack sat ready next to her, a purple fox with eyelashes and a flower tucked behind one ear.
