First Day of School

First day of school. We did pictures in the yellow chair out front before leaving — striped shirt, jean shorts, new sneakers, hair brushed, all of it holding together better than expected for that hour of the morning.

At the classroom the door was covered in yellow stars, one for each kid in the class, every star wearing little sunglasses. We stood there a minute reading the names before going in. The kid stood in front of the door for one more picture and the smile went from nervous to actual somewhere in the middle of it.

Then the door opened and that was that. The stars are still up there with everyone's name on them, which is a nice thing to walk past every morning from here on.
