Saturday Morning Kids' Soccer at the Polo Fields
Drove into San Francisco for Saturday morning kids' soccer at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park. Two games' worth of blue and white jerseys, most of the girls barely taller than the corner flags, all of them chasing the ball in one moving cluster the way that age does.
The field was chewed up in patches but the lines were freshly chalked, and there were strollers and folding chairs strung along the fence, parents shading their eyes against the sun. One kid ran half the first half with her arm straight up in the air for no reason anyone could see.
After the whistle they scattered to practice kicks near the sideline, and the one we came to watch kept lining the ball up on the chalk and driving it again and again, hair everywhere, orange cleats.
