Bungee Trampoline at the Balboa Fun Zone

Newport Beach today, and the Balboa Fun Zone on the boardwalk — eighty years old and still running its little strip of rides between the harbor and the shops. The bungee trampoline was the main event. The girls took turns getting strapped into the harness, yellow cords running up to two blue poles, and then it was just bounce, higher each time, until they were clearing the tops of the palm trees with the boat rental docks behind them.

The first one grinned the whole way through it. The second one figured out how to tuck her legs at the top and came down folded over the cords like she was diving, hair everywhere. The guy running it in the orange Fun Zone hoodie stood off to the side by the pole and mostly let them go.

Harbor cruise boats loading up next door, Pizza Pete's across the walk, the old pavilion cupola with its flag sticking up over the boat rental roof. The Ferris wheel is down the boardwalk from the trampoline but the bungee is where the time went. Blue sky the entire afternoon, wind off the water pulling the flags out straight.
