Grandma's Birthday on a Sunny Easter Weekend

I remember this weekend in April 2005. The weather was perfect for early spring in Michigan, and the magnolia tree was in full, spectacular bloom. The white petals were everywhere. We all got a bit dressed up and decided to take advantage of the sun, posing for photos in front of the tree before the main celebration began.

The real reason for the gathering was to celebrate my grandmother's birthday. We all moved inside, crowding around the kitchen counter where her cake was waiting with lit candles. It's funny looking back on these moments—you remember the specific combination of people, the expression on someone's face, the feeling of just being together in one room. It was a simple, happy day.
