Grandma's Birthday on Easter Weekend
Easter weekend fell on Grandma's birthday this year, so it turned into a two-part day. The morning half was everyone in their church clothes out on the lawn where the star magnolias have gone completely over — petals all through the grass, the trees so full you could barely see the branches. Six of us lined up in front of them, suits and black dresses, one pink shirt refusing to take it seriously.
Then over to the house for the birthday itself. Cake with a row of pink candles, the good stack of colored bowls out on the counter, the girls with sodas in hand. Grandma sat at the counter in her green striped shirt with her hands folded, waiting on the candles, and one of the girls stayed close beside her most of the afternoon, holding her hand and getting talked to.
We got a couple of full-family pictures around the cake before it was cut. Nobody agreed on which one everybody was looking at the camera in, so both went in the album.
