Pre-Prom Photos in Truckee
Pre-prom photos this evening, out at the golf course in Truckee. Everyone arrived in a knot of cars in the lot, and it took a while just to sort the group into anything resembling a line — the boys kept drifting, the girls kept fixing each other's hair.
Four boys first, dark suits, white rose boutonnieres, three of them managing not to laugh. Then seven girls shoulder to shoulder against the fairway and the ridgeline behind it, dresses running purple through lavender, black, ice blue, two greens, and one royal blue at the end. A couple of them carried little bouquets with ribbon.
The couples did the hand-kiss pose, which apparently required several attempts before anyone could hold a straight face. Last stop was the wooden bench by the big boulder, her on his knee, both of them finally looking like they'd relaxed. Then they were gone, off to the actual dance, and the rest of us stood around the parking lot a while longer.
One of the boys wore white New Balance sneakers with his suit. Nobody said a word about it.
