Early Summer Flow at Codfish Falls

A dark, forested hillside with two prominent trees silhouetted against a colorful sunset sky with distinctive clouds.

Out the door before the sun was up — the sky over the sagebrush still had a yellow band at the horizon when I crossed the creek near home. The point was to catch Codfish Falls while the snowmelt is still pushing, and it was worth the early start.

The water is as high as I've seen it. The main drop was a solid wall of white between the two big boulders, and above it whole stretches of the creek were running over bare granite with no channel at all, just water taking whatever slope it found. Spray was drifting downstream in the sun. There were still a few fingers of snow hanging on in the gullies of the crag above the canyon.

Couldn't hear much of anything over it. Sat on a rock near the base for a while and let it roar.
