Summer on the Water at a High Sierra Lake
Summer on the water, even though the peaks across the lake are still holding snow in late June. The whole day went to it.
Morning at Donner — the girls took turns on the paddleboard off the shore, and the dog insisted on going along, standing soaked at the front of the board like that was his position and always had been. He would not be talked off it.
Then the boat, out on Tahoe. Life jackets on the kids, grandma settled in the back, a slushie making the rounds. One of the girls stood in the bow with both arms up when we pointed toward the south end, where the snowfields come down almost to the tree line. The water was that deep blue it only gets in the middle of the lake, and cold enough that nobody argued hard for swimming.
The dog was still damp when we got back.
